If you are enrolling a St. John’s Law LL.M. bar-exam pathway program: either the LL.M. in U.S. Legal Studies or the LL.M. in Transnational Legal Practice (Bar Track), the LL.M. will help you become eligible to apply to sit for the New York bar exam.
Another key, and earlier step, is the application for the New York Board of Law Examiners (BOLE) to evaluate your first law degree. This is called the advanced evaluation of eligibility application. Use these links to review the BOLE guidelines, and start the online advanced evaluation of eligibility application:
- Foreign Legal Education page
- Foreign Legal Education Handbook
- Online Request for Foreign Evaluation of Academic Credentials
Ellen Gamber, Assistant Director of Graduate Studies, will be your point person for bar exam related questions. After you read through these materials, Ellen would be happy to go over any questions you may have. You can contact Ellen by emailing her at: firstname.lastname@example.org or by calling 718.990.6092.
The New York Bar exam is offered two times each year during the last week of February and July.
The advanced evaluation of eligibility application needs to be submitted according to the following schedule:
|Bar Exam Date||Documents||Deadline|
|February||Online Foreign Evaluation and all Required Foreign Documents (which it will take several months to gather).||May 1 of the year preceding the exam you wish to sit.|
|July||Online Foreign Evaluation and all Required Foreign Documents (which it will take several months to gather).||October 1 of the year preceding the exam you wish to sit.|
To Complete A Bar Exam Application
If you have successfully completed the Advanced Evaluation of Eligibility application and it has been approved by BOLE, and you have graduated with the LLM degree or will graduate in the months preceding the Bar Exam, you must apply in order to take the Bar Exam. Please do not wait until the last minute to apply for the the exam.
When you log into your account in the Applicant Service Portal on the Board of Law Examiners website you will be immediately directed to the Certificate of Attendance form upon applying for the examination. You are encouraged to have a copy of your transcript available so you will be able to complete the questions on this form. As a reminder, the application period for the July examination is April 1 through April 30 and from November 1 through November 30 for the February examination. Please allow sufficient time to complete these questions before the expiration of the application deadline.
