LL.M. New York Bar Exam Track Students

If you are enrolling a St. John’s Law LL.M. bar-exam pathway program: either the LL.M. in U.S. Legal Studies or the LL.M. in Transnational Legal Practice (Bar Track), the LL.M. will help you become eligible to apply to sit for the New York bar exam.

Another key, and earlier step, is the application for the New York Board of Law Examiners (BOLE) to evaluate your first law degree.  This is called the advanced evaluation of eligibility application.  Use these links to review the BOLE guidelines, and start the online advanced evaluation of eligibility application:

Marra Guttenplan, Director of Graduate Studies, will be your point person for bar exam related questions.  After you read through these materials, Marra would be happy to meet with you to go over any questions you may have.  You can book an appointment with Marra through this link: calendly.com/marraguttenplan or by emailing her: guttenpm@stjohns.edu.

The New York Bar exam is offered two times each year during the last week of February and July.

  • If you start your LL.M. program full-time in fall 2021, and plan to complete the program in two semesters, then you should plan to take the bar exam in July 2022.
  • If you start your LL.M. program part-time in fall 2021, and plan to complete the program in three semesters, you should plan to take the bar exam in February 2023.

The advanced evaluation of eligibility application needs to be submitted according to the following schedule:
